After that, there were no more appearances for years. Media attention faded, and news reports dried up.

But something was overlooked. The original blitz of early 1990s coverage missed the fact that sightings of a strange beast in the area had been coming in sporadically for decades, and not just from the area around Bray Road. For instance, in 1936 a local night watchman named Mark Schackelman reportedly saw what he thought was a dog rooting around an old Indian burial mound nearby. But when he turned his flashlight on the creature, he saw what in later years he described as “a demon from hell”—a wolflike, man-sized monstrosity with long claws and glowing eyes.

Even more telling, communities near the Bray Road hot spot told their own stories about hairy, wolflike and apelike creatures in their midst for years. Some called it the Bluff Monster, while to others it was simply the Eddy. Whatever you want to call it, it sure gets around. In May 2004, a witness reported a beast that sounds a lot like the Bray Road horror. Only this one was seen skulking down a residential street in Madison, Wisconsin, around 1:00 A.M.

Not that the creature has entirely abandoned the turnpike that made it famous. It’s said that in 1999 a woman who heard that a filmmaker was doing a documentary on the Bray Road beast piled her family into the car and drove out one night to try to catch him at work. They didn’t see the filmmaker, but they did see his subject—a huge, hairy, bipedal canine that charged to within fifty feet (15 m) of their car, nearly scaring the life out of them.
